Explosive-effusive-explosive: The role of magma ascent rates and paths in modulating caldera eruptions

چکیده

Abstract One of the biggest challenges in volcanology is assessing role magma properties (volatile budgets, storage depths, and ascent rates) controlling eruption explosivity. We use a new approach based on apatite to estimate volatile contents rates from sequence sub-Plinian, effusive, Vulcanian deposits at Rabaul caldera (Papua New Guinea) emplaced 2006 CE probe mechanisms responsible for sudden transitions styles. Our findings show that all magmas were originally stored similar conditions (2–4 km depth 1.8–2.5 wt% H2O melt); only formed lava flow stalled degassed shallower level (0.2–1.5 km) several months. A more energetic batch rose depth, bypassed transient reservoir, ascended within ?8 h Earth's surface (mean velocity ?0.2 m/s), yielding initial sub-Plinian phase eruption. The shallowly was then able reach as flow, likely through path opened by magma. last without shallow albeit slowly (ascent rate 0.03–0.1 m/s) than study illustrates how complexity plumbing systems may affect styles, including other volcanic systems, have implications interpreting volcano monitoring data.

Generation, ascent and eruption of magma on the Moon: New insights into source depths, magma supply, intrusions and effusive/explosive eruptions (Part 2: Predicted emplacement processes and observations)

We utilize a theoretical analysis of the generation, ascent, intrusion and eruption of basaltic magma on the Moon to develop new insights into magma source depths, supply processes, transport and emplacement mechanisms via dike intrusions, and effusive and explosive eruptions. We make predictions about the intrusion and eruption processes and compare these with the range of observed styles of m...

Generation, ascent and eruption of magma on the Moon: New insights into source depths, magma supply, intrusions and effusive/explosive eruptions (Part 1: Theory)

We model the ascent and eruption of lunar mare basalt magmas with new data on crustal thickness and density (GRAIL), magma properties, and surface topography, morphology and structure (Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter). GRAIL recently measured the broad spatial variation of the bulk density structure of the crust of the Moon. Comparing this with the densities of lunar basaltic and picritic magmas s...

Magma decompression rates during explosive eruptions of Kīlauea volcano, Hawaii, recorded by melt embayments

The decompression rate of magma as it ascends during volcanic eruptions is an important but poorly constrained parameter that controls many of the processes that influence eruptive behavior. In this study, we quantify decompression rates for basaltic magmas using volatile diffusion in olivine-hosted melt tubes (embayments) for three contrasting eruptions of Kīlauea volcano, Hawaii. Incomplete e...
